Day 20 - Flinders Ranges National Park

Heute war die Strecke bis zur nächsten Unterkunft nicht ganz so weit, wie die letzten Tage. Wir haben in Quorn noch gut und reichlich gefrühstückt sind sind dann über Hawker Richtung Wilpena Pound losgefahren. Wir hatten beabsichtigt, in Hawker im Supermarkt noch einzukaufen, da wir in der Rawnsley Park Station nur eine Kabine mit Eigenversorgung gemietet hatten.
In Hawker angekommen standen wir dann vor einem Problem: der Supermarkt existierte nicht mehr. Im Visitor Information Center sagte man uns aber, das man sowohl in Wilpena wie auch auf der Station einkaufen kann. Glück gehabt.

Auf dem weiteren Weg haben wir dann an vielen Lookouts angehalten und Fotos gemacht. Im National Park gabs dann auch reichlich Australian Wildlife neben der Straße zu beobachten, dieses mal mehr lebende Tiere ans tote auf der Straße. In Wilpena haben wir dann noch etwas zu Essen eingekauft und sind dann weiter zu unserer Unterkunft.

Rawnsley Park Station hat sich als absoluter Glücksgriff entpuppt. Die Kabine, und wir haben nur die einfachen, sind echt Klasse. So ein tolles Bad hatten wir lange nicht mehr. Plus vollständige kleine Küchenzeile incl. allem notwendigen Geschirr. Abends haben wir dann im Restaurant hier  super lecker Lamm gegessen. Es war ein für uns Deutsche ungewöhnliches Rezept, aber sehr lecker.

Morgen steht nicht viel an. Spazieren gehen, die Landschaft und die Tierwelt beobachten und fotografieren, vielleicht auch noch mal in den Pool. Im Moment sitzen wir draußen auf unserer Veranda und genießen noch einen kühlen Weißwein und die Stille im Outback. Übrigens, der Mond strahlt hier um einiges heller als zu hause. Wir sind gespannt auf den Sternenhimmel, denn hier stört keine strahlende Großstadt nebenan. Wir sind gespannt.

Today the track was up to the next location is not quite as far as the last few days. We have had breakfast good and plentiful in Quorn are then set off on Hawker direction Wilpena Pound. We had still intends to buy into Hawker in the supermarket because we had rented in the Rawnsley Park Station only self contained cabin.
In Hawker arrived we were faced with a problem: the supermarket no longer existed. In Visitor Information Center were told that you can buy both in Wilpena as well as on the station. Lucky.

On the way, we then stopped at many lookouts and took pictures. In the National Park then we met plenty of Australian Wildlife beside the road to watch, this time more live animals to the dead on the road. In Wilpena we then shopped a bit to eat and then got to our accommodation.

Rawnsley Park Station has proved to be absolute fantastic The cabin, and we have only the simple, are really great. Such a great bathroom we did not have very often. Plus complete small kitchenette incl. all necessary dishes. In the evening we ate delicious lamb in the restaurant here. It was, for us German, an unusual recipe, but delicious.

Tomorrow is not much. Walking, the scenery and watch the wildlife and take pictures, maybe one more time in the pool. Right now we sit on our porch and enjoy a cool white wine and the silence of the outback. Incidentally, the moon shines here considerably brighter than at home. We look forward to the night sky, because this does not interfere with radiant metropolis. We are excited.

Day 19 - Kleine Rundreise

Heute haben wir eine kleine Rundreise gemacht. Pt. Augusta, Horrocks Pass, Alligator Gorge und Melrose. Es war eine kurzweilige Fahrt, der Horrocks Pass und Alligator Gorge waren sehr beeindruckend. Besonders die 12 km zur Gorge waren ein Erlebnis. Wirklich sehr steile Anstiege und Gefälle-Strecken. Kein Wunder, das Gespanne da nicht lang dürfen. Morgen geht es weiter nach Wilpena. Ist mal nur eine kurze Fahrt, ca. 110 km.

Today we made a small trip. Pt. Augusta, Horrocks Pass, Alligator Gorge and Melrose. It was an entertaining ride, Horrocks Pass and Alligator Gorge were very impressive. Particularly the 12 km to the Gorge were a nice experience. Very steep ascents and descents routes. No wonder that towed vehecles are not allowed. Tomorrow we move on to Wilpena. It's just a short drive, about 110 km.

Day 18 - Broken Hill to Quorn

Nach dem Frühstück und Tanken haben wir uns auf den Weg nach Wilmington gemacht. Es ging ca. 380 km über der Barrier Highway. Wieder kaum Vegetation links und rechts des Weges, aber im typischen rot. War sehr schön anzusehen. Und wieder sehr viele tote Tiere neben und auch auf der Straße, so dass man ausweichen musste. Die Fahrt war aber nicht langweilig, da es auf der Strecke einige Ortschaften gab. Die bestanden allerdings nur aus wenigen Häusern. In einem dieser Orte gab es sogar eine 24h Tankstelle.

Nach einer Kaffeepause in Peterborough und einem Besuch im Visitor Information Center haben wir dann in Wilmington eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit gesucht. Wir haben uns dann aber sehr schnell entschieden, doch noch weiter bis nach Quorn zu fahren. Es ist gemütlich hier,wir können ein paar Ort, welche wir besuchen wollen, bequem erreichen und das Essen ist auch lecker. Der Plan für Morgen beinhalten Pt. Augusta, Alligator Gorge, Horrocks Pass und Mt. Remarkable.

After breakfast and refueling we made our way to Wilmington. It was about 380 km on the Barrier Highway. Again no vegetation left and right of the path, but in typical red. Was very nice to look at. And again a lot of dead animals beside and even on the road, so you had to dodge. But the trip was not boring because there were some places on the track. The pass, however, only a few houses. In one of these places there was even a 24 hour petrol station.

After a coffee break in Peterborough and a visit to the Visitor Information Center, we then searched in Wilmington a place to stay. But we then decided very quickly to go up to Quorn. It's comfortable, we can get some place that we want to visit, easily accessible and the food is also delicious. The plan for tomorrow include Pt. Augusta, Alligator Gorge, Horrocks Pass and Mt. Remarkable.

Day 17 - Broken Hill & Silverton

Heute hatten wir eine Erfahrung der angenehmen Art. Es ging 20 km aus der Stadt raus nach Silverton. Auf dem Weg dorthin links und rechts wiederum nur weites Land. Der Ort selbst hat nicht mehr als 20 Häuser, viele davon Galerien, ein Cafe, ein Hotel. Wir sind zuerst noch 5 km weiter zum Mundi Mundi Lookout. Die Aussicht in die Weiten des Outback dort oben waren atemberaubend schön.

Ich habe dann noch etwas im Ort selbst fotografiert. Tolle Motive. u.a. das Mad Max 2 Museum. Ist wohl zum Teil dort gedreht wurden.

Danach sind wir zurück nach Broken Hill und haben dort weiter fotografiert.

Neben den schönen Gebäuden gabs noch ein Eisenbahnmuseum und eine Ausstellung zum Bergbau hier. Am Abend haben wir im Astra Hotel zu Abend gegessen - leckere Steaks.

Letztes Event des Tages sollte der Sonnenuntergang um 20:00 Uhr im "Living Desert" mit seinen Skulpturen sein. Haben wir durch das Essen leider um ein paar Minuten verpasst, es war aber auch so sehr ansehnlich.

Morgen geht es dann weiter zur nächsten Station: Wilmington. Das sollte eine etwas kurzweiligere Fahrt werden als am Dienstag. Wir werden berichten.

Today we had an experience of the pleasant kind. It was 20 km out of town to Silverton. Along the way, the left and right turn only vast land. The place itself has no more than 20 houses, many galleries, a cafe, a hotel. We are first for 5 km to the Mundi Mundi Lookout. The view in the vastness of the Outback up there were stunning.

I then photographed something in itself. Great designs. especially the Mad Max 2 Museum. Is probably were partly filmed there.

Then we are back to Broken Hill and have continued photographed there.

Besides the beautiful buildings there was a railway museum and an exhibition on mining here. In the evening we had dinner at the Hotel Astra - delicious steaks.

Last event of the day should be the sunset at 20:00 in the "Living Desert" with its sculptures. We missed the sunset unfortunately a few minutes, but it was also so very presentable.

Tomorrow we will continue to the next station: Wilmington. This should be a little easier ride as on Tuesday. We will report.

Day 16 - Broken Hill

Der Plan für die Tour heute hörte sich eigentlich ganz einfach an. 295 km von Mildura nach Broken Hill. Die ersten ca 30 km waren auch normale Strecke. Der Rest war dann allerdings eine ganz besondere Erfahrung: 265 km einfach nur Leere, Nichts, Outback. Kaum Kurven, eine sichtbare Kreuzung mit Hinweisschildern. Uns sind kaum Autos begegnet, auf unserer Seite haben wir drei gesehen. Hinweise auf Siedlungen? Fehlanzeige. Einzig auf etwa halbem Weg war eine Tankstelle incl. Cafe. Natürlich fehlten nicht die Warnschilder für Kangaroos. Gesehen haben wir allerdings nur tote Tiere neben der Straße. Dafür aber sehr viele Ziegen, welche direkt neben der Straße nach Nahrung suchten. Wir waren Beide froh, dann endlich in Broken Hill angekommen zu sein.

Da wir etwas zu früh für unsere Unterkunft waren, haben wir zuerst dem "Royal Flying Doctor Services" Information Center am Flughafen einen Besuch abgestattet. Eine kleine Führung mit Film kostete 8,50 $AUD und war sehr interessant. Wir haben dort auch einiges an Souvenirs und Geschenken gekauft, denn wie sagte die Dame an der Kasse so schön: "es hilft uns, die Flugzeuge zu bezahlen." Wen es interessiert, dem kann ich bei Gelegenheit mehr erzählen.

In der Unterkunft angekommen mussten wir feststellen, das wir dieses mal die untere Kategorie erwischt haben, aber es ist OK. Nach 2 Nächten geht es weiter. Gegessen haben wir dann auch noch und etwas Sightseeing gemacht. Die zwei Nächte sind hier vollkommen ausreichend.

The plan for the tour today actually sounded quite simple. 295 km from Mildura to Broken Hill. The first, about 30 km were just normal range. The rest was, however, a very special experience: 265 km, just emptiness, vast scenerie, Outback. Hardly curves, one visible crossing with signs. We hardly encountered cars, on our side, we have seen three. Evidence of settlements? None. Only around halfway was a gas station incl. Cafe. Of course, not missing the warning signs for kangaroos. Seen, however, we have only dead animals beside the road. For very many goats, which were right next to the street for food. We were both glad to have finally arrived in Broken Hill.

Since we were a little early for our accommodation, we have first the "Royal Flying Doctor Services" Information Center paid a visit at the airport. A small guide with film cost $ 8.50 AUD and was very interesting. We also purchased there on souvenirs and gifts, because as said the lady at the cash register: "It helps us to pay for the aircraft's" I can tell sometimes more.

Once in the hotel we found out that this time we caught the lower category, but it's OK. After 2 nights we continue. We ate then also and made some sightseeing. The two nights are perfectly adequate here.

Day 15 - Mildura

Letzter Tag in Hamilton, letztes Frühstück mit Nanette und Pat. Die Tage mit den beiden waren absolut toll, wir wurden bis zum letzten Moment mit allem umsorgt. Wir hatten vor, nach dem Abschied noch schnell zum Aldi und Einkaufen zu fahren und dann weiter nach Mildura. Weit gefehlt. Natürlich wurden wir von Pat dort hin gefahren und erst dann zur Church Hill Villa zum Auto packen.

Nach einem emotionalem Abschied haben wir uns dann auf den Weg gemacht, unser Tagesziel Mildura zu erreichen. Die Fahrt ging ca.440 km durch typisch australische Landschaft. Gerade Highways mit ab und zu ein paar Ortschaften. Es war teilweise etwas ermüdend, aber wir haben uns die Strecke geteilt und gegen 16:00 Uhr das Mildura Golf Club Ressort erreicht. Tolle Unterkunft, gibt nix zu meckern. Das Abendessen (grilled Barramundi) dann war allerdings sowas von lecker, wow. Solch leckeren Fisch hatten wir lange nicht. Jetzt suchen wir uns noch eine Unterkunft für die nächsten 2 Tage in Broken Hill, denn das ist unser Ziel für morgen. CA Mates.

Last day in Hamilton, last breakfast with Nanette and Pat. The days with them were absolutely great, we were cared for until the last moment with everything. We had planned to go yet quickly to Aldi and shopping after the bye and then on to Mildura. No way. Of course, we were driven by Pat there and then we went to Church Hill Villa to pack the car .

After an emotional farewell we made our way to reach our today's destination Mildura. The trip went ca.440 km through typical Australian countryside. Just highways with now and then a few localities. It was partly a bit tiring, but we shared the route and reached around 16:00 the Mildura Golf Club Resort. Great place to stay there, nothing to complain about. The dinner (grilled Barramundi) was kind of delicious, wow. Such delicious fish we had not long. Now we look for another hotel for the next 2 days in Broken Hill, because that is our goal for tomorrow. CA Mates.

Day 14 - The Grampians

Unsere Tour heute wollten wir unbedingt noch einmal machen, da das Wetter beim letzten mal in 2010 einfach nur extrem schlecht war. Wir waren in den Grampians gerade einmal an den MacKenzie Falls gewesen. Mehr erlaubt uns das Wetter einfach nicht. Am Parkplatz zu den Balconies sind wir noch nicht einmal ausgestiegen, weil es hagelte und gerade einmal 5°C hatte. Heute meinte es das Wetter wesentlich besser mit uns. Schon die Fahrt nach Halls Gap war ein Erlebnis. Zuerst sind wir noch einmal die MacKenzie Falls angefahren und diesmal auch hinunter gestiegen. Das hat sich wirklich gelohnt, auch wenn es sehr anstrengend war.

Danach dann endlich zu den Balconies am Reed's Lookout. Vom Parkplatz war es noch 1 km zu laufen. Am Ende des Pfades wurden wir mit atemberaubenden Aussichten belohnt. Die Balconies selbst waren nicht zugänglich, war aber kein Problem. Denn ob ich mich da vorne drauf gesetzt hätte und die Beine runterbaumeln lassen...... Ich bin mir da nicht so sicher.

Auf dem nach Hause Weg haben wir nochmal in Halls Gap Pause gemacht, was gegessen und auch Pat's Sohn mit Familie getroffen. Dann war der Tag auch schon fast rum und es ging wieder zurück nach Hamilton. Am Abend habe ich dann noch mit Nanette einen kleine Foto Exkurs in den Hamilton Botanical Garden gemacht. Auch das hat Spaß gemacht.

An dieser Stelle müssen wir uns herzlichst bei Nanette und Pat bedanken. Wir wurden freundlichst aufgenommen, wir bekamen Unterkunft und verpflegt wurden wir auch noch. Plus sie haben uns zu all den Orten gefahren, die wir gerne sehen wollten. Wir würden uns wünschen, das bei einem Besuch in Deutschland wieder gut machen zu können. Bis dahin bleibt uns nur zu sagen: Herzlichsten Dank, es war uns eine Freude und Ehre, eure Gäste sein zu dürfen.

Our tour today we wanted to do it again because the weather the last time in 2010 was just extremely poor. We had been just at the MacKenzie Falls in the Grampians. The weather didn't allow us to do more. At the car park at the Balconies we have not even got out because it rained and just had 5°C and heavy rain. Today, the weather did much better with us. Even the trip to Halls Gap was an experience. First, we are once again approached MacKenzie Falls and I made all the way down to the bottom of the falls. This was really worth it, even if it was very tiring.

Then finally the Balconies at Reed's Lookout. From the parking lot it was still 1 km walk. At the end of the path we were rewarded with breathtaking views. The Balconies themselves were not available, but was not a problem. Because I had never made it to sit on the Balconies.

On the way home, we took a break in Halls Gap, ate something and also met Pat's son and his family. Then the day was almost over and we went back to Hamilton. In the evening, I did a short photo walk with Nanette into the Hamilton Botanical Garden. Even that was fun.

At this point, we must sincerely thank Nanette and Pat. We were kindly received, we were given accommodation and fed we were even. Plus they have driven us to all the places we wanted to see. We would hope to be able to do that well again on a visit to Germany. Until then we can only say: Heartfelt thanks, it was a pleasure and honor to be your guests.

Day 13 - Casterton

Heute sind wir mit Pat und Nanette nach Casterton gefahren. War eine schöne Strecke und Casterton ist eine nette, kleine Stadt mit schönen Geschäften. Wir haben entdeckt, dass es inzwischen in Australien überall schöne Cafe's gibt mit tollen Kuchen und verschiedensten Kaffees. In der Zwischenzeit mag ich den Cafe Latte hier sehr. Auf dem Rückweg haben wir noch einen Stop in einer kleinen Schokoladenfabrik in Coleraine gemacht. Wir konnten dort köstliche Schokolade probieren und haben uns auch etwas mitgenommen.

Am Abend waren dann zum Abendessen (große Tafel) Freunde aus der Nachbarschaft zu Gast. Wir müssen sagen, es war ein toller Abend mit tollem Essen und angenehmer Unterhaltung. Wir haben es sehr genossen.

Today we went with Pat and Nanette to Casterton. Was a nice track and Casterton is a pleasant little town with nice shops. We have discovered that there are now everywhere in Australia beautiful cafes with great cakes and various coffees. In the meantime, I like the delicious cafe latte. On the way back we made a stop at a small chocolate factory in Coleraine. We were able to taste delicious chocolate and have taken us a bit.

Evening were then for dinner (large board) neighborhood friends to guest. We have to say it was a great evening with great food and pleasant conversation. We enjoyed it.
